Historical Flight #: 006

Aircraft used: DC-3, C-45 and (Sunderland Flying boat (Sand_v10.zip at Avsim or Flightsim)(DC4_V10)

Berlin Airlift Known as Operation Vittles June 1948.

The Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin figuring to starve out the Americans and the West German people, C-47’s begin the airlift to supply the city. Soon the C-47’s were found to be inadequate for the job and calls went out for C-54’s.

When the calls went out in late June 1948 for C- 54s, the first units called on to supply aircraft were: the 20th Troop Carrier Squadron, Panama Canal Zone; the 54th Troop Carrier Squadron, Anchorage, Alaska; the 19th Troop Carrier Squadron, Hawaii; and the 17th Air Transport Squadron, Great Falls, Montana. Other C-54s came from Bergstrom AFB, Fairfield Suisun AFB, California, and Brookley AFB, Alabama. By July 10 some 54 C-54s had arrived to supplement the C-47s.

They were joined by some Short Sunderland’s flying from the Elbe River at (EDHI) Finkenwerder and landing on lake Havel See near the end of Rwy. 26 at (EDDT)Tegel in Berlin.

The C-47’s carried 3,000 lbs of supplies while the C-54’s carried 20,000 lbs and the Short Sunderland’s were good for 18,000 lbs. Use these loads when going in to Berlin.

There were three corridors into the City, (1) Hamburg to Berlin, The British and French route
(2) Rhein/Main to Berlin the American Route and (3) Hannover-Bueckeburg to Berlin Used to transport out the Sick and the Children. The Aircraft flew in with loads of Coal, Candy for the Children and Supplies and out with loads of Sick and Children to (EDDV)Hannover for treatment.

The Corridor with a Ceiling 10.000 ft. and 20 miles Wide were a real challenge. Flights going in flew 6000 ft and flights coming out used 7000 ft this made for some very near misses. The Aircraft also must stay within 20 miles radius of Berlin landing and taking off. From (EDDI) Tempelhof & (EDDT)Tegel..
To get the real feel of the flights set your Weather to Fogged In and try your hand at flying the three corridors. First with the C-47, then the C-54 and finally the Short Sunderland from the Elbe River.

Flight #1:- C-47 Loaded with 3000 lbs Coal from (EDDH) Hamburg course 101 to (NDB 315) then right to course 131 to (NDB 392)Tegel Then 078 to Tegel (VOR 112.30). Get your clearance to (EDDT) Tegel Airfield. Land and unload. Pick up a load of Children and leave via (NDB 347) fly course 265 to (NDB 427) then 283 for Hannover. (EDDV 116.90) Drop the Children and return course 033 to (NDB 284) finally to course 350 for (EDDH) Hamburg (VOR 115.80) Land and Load. (App 2hrs 30 Min)

Flight #2:- C-47 loaded with 3000 lbs food from Rhein/Main(EDDF) course 055 to (NDB 425) turn to course 042 to (NDB 347) then course 083 for (EDDI) Tempelhof, (VOR 114.10) Land unload and pick up Patients and Children Take off. For (NDB 347) there turn to course 272 for (EDOC) Gardelegen turn to 196 for Giessen (NDB 314) Get your clearance for (EDDV) Hannover(VOR 113.95). Land, unload and leave for EDDF Rhein-Main.(VOR 115.90) Land and leave your Aircraft to be loaded for immediate take off. (APP 3 hr 30 min)

Flight #3:- Try your hand at flying the Sunderland Carrying 18000 lb supplies to Berlin from Elb River near (EDHI)Finkenwerder take course 095 to (NDB 315) turn right to course 131 for (EDDT) Tegel (NDB 392) turn left and land on the lake Havel See off the end of rwy.26 Tegel in Berlin. Unload and return via (NDB 392) and (NDB 315) to Elb River at Hamburg (VOR 123.25) (App 2 hrs)

Aircraft used: Pilot Choice

From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days.
It has been called the “Last Great Race on Earth” and it has won worldwide acclaim and interest. German, Spanish, British, Japanese and American film crews have covered the event. Journalists from outdoor magazines, adventure magazines, newspapers and wire services flock to Anchorage and Nome to record the excitement. It’s not just a dog sled race, it’s a race in which unique men and woman compete. Mushers enter from all walks of life. Fishermen, lawyers, doctors, miners, artists, natives, Canadians, Swiss, French and others; men and women each with their own story, each with their own reasons for going the distance. It’s a race organized and run primarily by volunteers, thousands of volunteers, men and women, students and village residents. They man headquarters at Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Nome and Wasilla. They fly volunteers, veterinarians, dog food and supplies. They act as checkers, coordinators, and family supporters of each musher

This years race starts March 1st. 2008 and will take the northern route. The route I chose is the Southern Route, although the scenery covers both routes.

Aircraft used: Convair CV-340

1954 Recreation flight from San Diego to Essendon Australia

To do this flight you will need to download from flightsim.com 1954_BZD.zip and a copy of a good Convair CV-340 from calclassic.com. You may wish to change the panel to one with a better autopilot.

1954_BZD.zip

This FS2004 (FS9) flight replicates the route taken by Ansett-ANA's Convair CV-340 VH-BZD when it was delivered from San Diego to Essendon airport, Melbourne. The flight commenced on the morning of August 4th. 1954 and they arrived in Melbourne 12 days later, on the 16th. August. It was ferried to Australia by Captains C R Sealey,
A. Lane, A. Thomson & G. L. Brown & Navigator E. W. P Adams and the route took them
across the continental United States to Kansas City, thence New York, Gander (Canada), Shannon (Eire), London, Rome, Beirut, Bahrein, Karachi, New Delhi, Calcutta, Singapore, Jakarta, Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney and finally Essendon airport, Melbourne.

Why did they take the "long way round" rather than ferry the aircraft across the Pacific?
The simple reason is that the CV-340 did not have the range required to safely transit thedistances between the only refuelling points available down through the Pacific Ocean.
